Understanding the Difference Between Dermal Fillers and Wrinkle Reduction Treatments

September 17, 20243 min read

Even though both dermal fillers and wrinkle reduction treatments have been available for years, many people still ask about their differences.

Distinct Treatments for Different Needs Why the Confusing Names?

In Australia, these treatments are all classified as S4 drugs. This means they require a doctor’s prescription and cannot be advertised to the public by law.

I can’t use specific product names in this public post. It’s similar to discussing the difference between coffee and tea without actually saying “coffee” or “tea”. I’ll do my best to explain!

What are Dermal Fillers and Wrinkle Reduction Treatments?

Dermal fillers are products that are applied into or under the skin to plump or volumise an area. Some are very fine and can be used on individual lines, some are mid-strength for deeper lines and lips, and some are more volumising for areas like the temples, cheeks, nose, and chin.

Wrinkle reduction treatments, often referred to as “neuro-modulators,” work by reducing muscle activity where they are applied.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers and Wrinkle Reduction Treatments Last?

The duration of results varies based on the product used, the area treated, and individual factors. Generally, wrinkle reduction treatments last 3-5 months. Dermal fillers tend to last longer, typically between 9 months and 2 years, with an average of 12-18 months. Some fillers can last longer, and there is a permanent option available. Fillers in the lips usually last 6-12 months.

How Are These Treatments Administered?

Wrinkle reduction treatments are applied with small applications, usually to or just beneath the skin’s surface. Dermal fillers can be applied similarly or placed deeper depending on the desired effect. Often, fillers are placed with a fine cannula, a round-tipped tool, which reduces discomfort and the risk of bruising.

When Will I See Results?

Most dermal fillers provide immediate results. Some types, particularly those that stimulate collagen, show effects that increase gradually over about three months. Wrinkle reduction treatments generally take 4-7 days to start working, with full results visible in 10-14 days.

What Are They Used For?

Wrinkle reduction treatments are primarily used for:

  • Frown lines

  • Forehead lines

  • Crow’s feet

They can also treat:

  • Lines on the sides of the nose (bunny lines)

  • Lines around the lips

  • Vertical neck bands

  • A “gummy smile” (excessive gum visibility when smiling)

  • Teeth grinding

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Excessive sweating (usually from the armpits)

  • Reducing the size of the jaw muscle for a more refined appearance

Dermal fillers are used to add volume where needed, addressing volume loss due to aging in areas such as:

  • Cheeks

  • Sides of the face

  • Jawline

  • Temples

  • Forehead

  • Folds around the mouth

They can also enhance facial features by:

  • Highlighting cheekbones

  • Straightening the nose

  • Strengthening a weak chin

  • Adding volume to the lips

Fine fillers can soften individual lines, wrinkles, and scars, and improve the skin’s texture and tone without adding volume.

Combining Treatments

Yes, you can certainly have both dermal fillers and wrinkle reduction treatments. These treatments complement each other, and many patients achieve the best results with a combination approach. For instance, if frown lines are deeply ingrained, wrinkle reduction treatments can reduce muscle strength first, followed by fine line fillers to soften the remaining lines.

Most patients find that treating wrinkles and expression lines with wrinkle reduction treatments, combined with dermal fillers to restore lost volume, provides the best overall results.
